Okay, I blatantly stole these from ‘ blog, but what the hell.

Great stuff! Naturally, the point is to “preserve the island” and nothing to do with the “162,000-square miles of ocean that occupy a crucial strategic position.”

“We have done everything short of surveillance out there 24/7,” Wesely said. “We have no ideas right now, no leads or anything about where to
look.”

“Romania’s first official witch was registered Monday after months of negotiations with the government that finally introduced witchcraft as a legal occupation.”

It was thought the sub-glacial lakes had been completely sealed for millions of years, enabling unique species to evolve in them.”

This from the comments of local residents: “There are a lot of vulnerable people in society who like to indulge in
sexual fantasies. They can go on to become dangerous people.”

Let that be a warning to you! You morally debased sexual fantasisers! You should all be made to wear signs around your neck, stating that you have indulged in sexual fantasy and could, at any moment, become dangerous!

This has been a public service announcement. Thank you for reading.

The past comes a-calling

It’s not every day that your ancient past comes back to revisit you. My best friend, while I still lived in Germany, was a guy called Thorsten; this is about 20 years ago now and we fell out of contact about 10 years ago. No particular reason, just distance and time really.

However very recently I got a phone call, completely out of the blue, from his girlfriend who, in an elaborate quest of cyber-sleuthing had managed to track me down and get my landline number from directory enquiries. (Aside: No matter how glad I am that I was contacted, it does show me that I need to be more careful with my private details). It turns out it as recently been Thorsten’s 30th birthday. His present was to be a trip to London and his surprise was to be meeting up with me.

And it all worked out. I was nervous beforehand of course. We hadn’t been in contact for so very long and people change. Would this be doomed meet-up where we wouldn’t know what to say to each other after half an hour of reminiscing?

As it turns out, my fears were groundless. We had a good evening, and not just spent reminiscing. I’m sure I probably came over as some kind of cynical lush, but they appear to have been the forgiving type.

So there you go. Sometimes the past comes a-knocking and now and then it’s not at all bad.

Pandora + LastFM

As further elaboration to DeathOwl’s post, I hereby ask: Wouldn’t it be nice to link your list with Pandora?

Well, you can! More info here:

And, more for my reference than anything else, while we’re on the topic of music tools, don’t forget . Their blurb: Call Shazam on your mobile (2580). Hold out your phone to the music. The phone will hang up after 30 seconds. We send you a text telling you artist name & song.
It doesn’t matter what tariff you’re on, it costs 50p to tag a track on the 3 Network, O2, Orange, T-Mobile, Virgin Mobile and Vodafone – plus your standard call charges.

Their newest feature is that you can log into their website and buy the tracks that you have ‘tagged’, to use their terminology.

Or, you just go to and download it for $0.10!

The adverts most people found offensive in the UK in the last year? People talking with their mouth full and a girl wearing pants. Outrageous!

I’m actually pleased that the top 5 complaints were not upheld by the ASA. The first one that did was that bloody frog. Although… More people found mannequins with erect nipples more offensive than the frog? These are sad times…

BBC NEWS Magazine Park and write: “There is no need for anyone to be homeless. There are very many tireless, selfless people doing paid and voluntary work to help people like this woman. She knows this and her refusal to go to them is an insult. It is her choice to live on the street and it will be her fault if something bad happens to her. The opportunity to help herself is there.”

The article itself is about Wandering Scribe, a blog by a homeless woman who lives in her car and blogs from a library about her situation. Interesting enough, but what I particurly found interesting were the comments. A great many sympathetic comments, a handful like the above and a couple hypothesising that this is all a media publicity stunt.

Apparently if you can communicate what’s happening to you then you should have the ability to get out of your situation fairly easily. How safe and secure some people’s lives are…

Update

Apr 242006

Well, it’s been a busy week and a half, so it’s time for the obligatory ‘I haven’t posted in ages’ update!

Friday the 14th
Working in the home office. Blergh! Working on a bank holiday sucks, but doubly so when you have nothing to do.
Thought of the day: Zzzzz… Bored… Entertain me!

Saturday the 15th
Shopping for Penny and the ‘The Wolves in the Walls’ at the in Hammersmith, a cute little out-of-centre theatre. The piece was wonderful and all enjoyed it, from the kiddies right up to the adults, Penny and I included. The wolves themselves were excellently done.
Thought of the day: When the wolves come out of the walls, !

Sunday the 16th
Meeting the ‘rents was happily painless. The sacrifices we make just to make a good impression. Even drinking Hock.

Monday the 17th
Thought of the day: None. Total relaxation as I had the day off for a change and used it to do absolutely nothing.

Tuesday the 18th
Presentation in .
Thought of the day: If I just muscle my way through this presentation, all these people might not realise how nervous I am.
Motto of the day: Fake it ’til you make it.

Wednesday the 19th
Presentations, workshops, blah blah blah. The evening was a pirates themed night of entertainment at . Think five hour dinner show where the cast are also serving food and drinks (unlimited) and getting you to take part in the singing, dancing and the conga. After three congas (out of eight) I gave up and decided I’d had enough of enforced fun and it started to feel like an army of gaudily dressed Butlins animators were brainwashing us by singing at us in Dutch.
Thought of the night: You’d think with 40+ project team members on a stage, at least one of them would know the way to Amarillo?

Thursday the 20th
Presentations, workshops, blah blah blah.
Thought of the day: I’m so glad I didn’t abuse the ‘drink as much as you want’ at the show last night, and thankfully my delegates did.

Friday the 21st
Home vie Schiphol. Hurrah! Then pizza, beer and cocktails with Penny on a tour of Woking before collapsing, exhausted.
Thought of the day: Should I be worried that I know Schiphol so well that I can give directions despite not having been there for well over a year?

Saturday the 22nd – Salute
After grabbing some breakfast bagels in town, it was time tohead to London to meet up with Bryce and Tim at . Managed to play some games, generally catch up and avoid too much lead poisoning. Wizkids stand very dissapointing as there was no demo of High Stakes Drifter and a poor showing of the new demo. Looked okay though.
Afterwards, at exactly Beer O’Clock, off to the for coktails while we waited for Penny to show up.

Saturday the 22nd – Pirates & Wenches Party
Saturday night was ! (click for photos; ) The theme of the party was Pirates and Wenches and everyone, to differing degrees, dressed up accordingly. All good fun. By a stroke of luck Bryce and I caught a mysterious masked hoodlum who re-decorated Mandy’s beloved , and managed to scare him off before he/she managed to do any harm. We feel we deserve a good citizenship award at the very least.
Thought of the day: Yarr! (Of course!)

Sunday the 23rd
An early(-ish) start to head back home and nurse our hangovers doing boring unintellectual activities that wouldn’t tax our toxic brains. I watched , which was good, very different and powerful, And long. Also watched , a true rogue if ever I saw one.
Thought of the day: None. Thankfully.
