Now that the blog is finally online again, I can start talking about Wanted, the film loosely based on Mark Millar’s 2003 comic and directed by Timur “Nightwatch” Bekmambetov. The movie is high-octane action that sucks you in, spins you around, tells you a cracking tale and spits you out at the end well satisfied. There is enough of Bekmambetov’s weirdness, nods towards Fight Club and Nightwatch, sheer exuberance and good acting to make this better than merely the good but brainless action movie the trailer implied.
I rate it: Must watch and will buy

Absolutely.
The Millar/Jones original arrived today for comparison purposes.
But yeah, I was very impressed by the film & and have already decided it is a Purchase when it comes out.
Great fun.
Can’t recommend it enough.
Hmm Mandy and I didn’t like it. The action was pretty good, but it was a bit OTT on the gore, and the underlying (distorted) morality of the characters made me quite uncomfortable – particularly the very last scene where the lead character was pontificating a bit.
Heh, your comment was classed as spam. How amusing.
But yes, all the things you mention are true, but I guess we’re looking for different things. I liked the twist on morality, even though, to an extent, they still had to end it with “all the bad people are dead apart from the one person who’s not quite as bad”. Pontificating? Perhaps not the word I’d have chosen; some people I’ve spoken to were uncomfortable about a) the fourth wall being breached and b) being basically called losers by an assassin.
